Interview With Marva Dawn: Our Contributors (Sep-Oct 2002)

We invite you to eavesdrop on recent conversations John Ogren had with Sally Morgenthaler and Marva Dawn. Ogren spoke with Morgenthaler and Dawn and asked if they believe it is possible to have authentic, God-pleasing, Christian worship that is also an occasion for mission. The dialog that this and other questions produced, we believe, will challenge you to think about holiness and ministry in ways you’ve never thought before.

Sally Morgenthaler
Sally Morgenthaler’s article, “Out of the Box: Authentic Worship in a Postmodern Culture” (Worship Leader, May/June 1998) helped spark a national, crossgenerational discussion about the future of worship in the United States. Morgenthaler’s Worship Evangelism: Inviting Unbelievers Into the Presence of God (Zondervan, 1995) has become a touchstone for postmodern, worship-driven ministry. Her next work, The Uncharted Now (to be published by Inter Varsity Press) will focus on worship in a postmodern culture. Morgenthaler has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses at Texas Christian University, Denver Seminary, Gordon Conwell Seminary, Covenant Bible College, Baylor University, The Conservatory for Praise and Worship, and The Mars Hill Graduate School in Seattle. She has been a featured guest on radio stations and at worship conferences across the country. Founder of www.sacramentis.com and contributor to Worship Leader and Rev and many other publications, Morgenthaler now functions as on-site worship consultant for Denver Seminary and Pathways Church. Her children, Peder, and Anna Claire, are her primary joy. See her web site: www.sacramentis.com.

Marva Dawn
Marva Dawn is a theologian, author, musician, and educator with Christians Equipped for Ministry of Vancouver, Washington, and Teaching Fellow in Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has four masters degrees and a Ph.D. in Christian Ethics and the Scriptures from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Dawn has spoken for clergy and worship conferences and seminaries throughout North America and in Madagascar and in Eastern and Western Europe. She has written more than a dozen books, including Reaching Out without Dumbing Down: A Theology of Worship for This Urgent Time and A Royal “Waste” of Time: The Splendor of Worshiping God and Being Church for the World, both published by Eerdmans.
